Shea Butter - Beauty by Nature

What is Shea Butter?
Shea Butter is a fatty extract from the seed of the Shea tree that predominantly grows in the African semi-arid savannah belt. The extract is an all natural Vitamin A cream and known to contain a number of ingredients with biological activities. These give Shea Butter its great moisturizing for skin-caring and remarkable healing properties for skin ailments including blemishes, itching, sunburns and skin wounds.

Extract from a document of the UN (UNDP), 2007

Shea Butter is also known for having the highest percentage of unsaponifiables of all  vegetable fats
 - bye-bye wrinkles -

These unsaponifiables are attributed high healing and wellness characteristics for our skin and this is one reason why unrefined and high quality Shea Butter is regarded as highly valuable.  For example, an independent Shea butter specialist is cited by saying the following with regards to research results:

„Shea Butter contains substances with a multiplicity of therapeutic advantages like for example regenerative, anti-eczema, anti-wrinkle and UV-protection  characteristics.”

According to the American Shea Butter Institute the really special feature of unrefined Shea butter is the exceptionally high percentage of substances with healing qualities. These substances consist of nutrients, vitamins and other „pytho-nutrients“. Other oils can also serve as a good source of moisture but do no contain any or do not contain many substances with healing qualities. That is why such products can be considered as much less valuable than unrefined Shea Butter. It is of no surprise that the traditional experience with Shea Butter in Africa led to the name “Karité Tree” for the Shea tree which means something like “Tree of Life“.  As a consequence of all the positive substances inherent in unrefined, high quality Shea Butter it is of no surprise that literature and research reports reveals an impressive variety of applications for Shea Butter. Shea Butter can prevent and improve the following skin conditions:

Dry skin, rash, wrinkles, itching, sunburn, after shave treatment, small wounds, skin cracks, hard and rough skin (check your feet), cold weather protection, chilblains,  prevention against stretch marks for pregnant women, insect bites, muscle –fatigue, -pain and –tension, before and after physical activity, skin allergies, excemes, dermatitis, skin damage after heat/sun impact.

Attention: According to the America Shea Butter Institute this wide range of applications and the positive characteristics of Shea butter dependent on what kind of Shea butter you are using. It also depends if chemicals and preservatives were added to the Shea butter. This would  influence the Shea Butter qualities negatively.

Furthermore, independent experts assured us that hand-made Shea Butter can be regarded as being of higher quality than machine-made or industrial Shea Butter.1

-Only pure and unrefined Shea Butter holds these positive characteristics. That is why Shea WaLe Shea Butter is unrefined, pure and handmade with great care - For your best skin.

Characteristics of pure, unrefined Shea Butter: Shea Butter is generally beige to yellow; it is not white, dark brown or green. These colors would mean that it is not a pure Shea Butter anymore and was subject to processing or refining. Pure, unrefined  Shea Butter has a characteristic scent that is not a perfume scent. These scent disappears after 10-20% minutes. Unfortunately and due to widespread quality problems with standard Shea Butter the smell of Shea Butter gained some negative reputation. Good Shea Butter has a pleasant, almost fruity butter scent. It a a quality sign and stands for this great, pure and unrefined product with its great skin care characteristics.

I, personally, like the scent of Shea WaLe Shea Butter very much and find it much more appealing than the one of other standard Shea Butter products. We have identified some handling issues that influence the scent:

For example:

  • If the roasting is not done with great care the butter will smell burned.
  • Machine made butter has a less appealing scent than handmade butter.
  • If the moisture content is too high the butter smells rancid soon. Attention: It is not recommended to apply rancid Shea Butter onto your skin.

Please consider this: Bad quality Shea Butter production can be avoided through training and strict supervision by independent management personnel.  That is why we think...

...only strict quality control ensures the delivery of high quality Shea butter (read more about this topic under
